At Daffodil Hill Press, we create decodable books—books specifically designed to help students learn to read using phonics, by sounding out words.
Many phonics-based books often have confusing plots, unnatural sentences and lack diversity. We set out to change that.
Our decodable books feature meaningful stories that make sense and reflect the diverse backgrounds of real families and communities. Our books highlight different ethnicities, gender expressions, and family structures, which is why we call them "Little books with big hearts."
We also provide lesson plans and easy-to-use materials for teachers to understand their need for efficient, ready-to-go resources.
We began our business so that we would have books to use with the teachers and students we work with. We thought, "The books we want don't exist, so let's make them."
Daffodil Hill Press began in 2022 when four educators realized the need for better materials to support early childhood reading development. When we started Daffodil Hill Press, our goal was to create the kinds of books we wished our students could have and the type of resources we wanted to use as educators.
We came together, wrote and drew, and figured out how to print and ship our books. Early on, this included packaging and shipping the books ourselves. Our operations have also grown as the business has grown to support schools nationally and internationally.
We care deeply about educators and children, and we keep that in mind as we author and illustrate books, construct instructional resources for teachers, and lead professional development.
While some companies focus on churning out resources to create products that meet the educational buzzwords of the day, when we make decisions, we think first about teachers and students. How long should these books be, and why? What's the best format for this that will help teachers? How many books should we have on each skill?
Each question is examined with teachers and their students in mind. At Daffodil Hill Press, we seek to make books and materials that are good for students, teachers, and the world.
Just as surrounding yourself with good people makes life better, surrounding yourself with kind and knowledgeable mentorship makes business better and the road easier to travel.
